Every time I read this I am again reminded of how much I love it. For its honesty, its humor, its utter lack of sentimentality. I lived in the west, I spent time as a child on a reservation with friends, and I hear an authentic voice here, one that acknowledges the darkness without denying the light, and walks a hard road with a wry laugh and an utter lack of glamour or falseness. To me it feels pitch perfect.
